Assignment 1: set up your website on UW servers

Students have access to the University of Washington’s Shared Web Hosting Server to publish web pages and files.

Here’s how to get set up your account on UW servers.

  1. Activate your shared hosting service
  2. Once you’ve done this, then wait a moment; you will see your URL.
    The format for the URL will be something like this https://xxxx.washington.edu/YourNetID
    Copy that URL!
    uwnetID

 

What is a web server?

The primary function of a web server is to deliver web pages upon the request of clients. This means delivering HTML documents and any additional content that may be included such as images, style sheets or JavaScript.

What is File Transfer Protocol (FTP)?

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a standard network protocol used to transfer files from one host to another over a TCP-based network, such as the Internet. FTP is built on a client-server architecture and utilizes separate control and data connections between the client and server.
